Or as my work-wife likes to say: β€˜how great are women?’

Dear friends,

I’ll admit it. I struggled to think of what to write this week.

It’s not that there’s nothing to say. It’s the opposite, in fact. There’s so much going on and all of it is… well, a little tiring.

Most moments of professional panic end when I call my partner-in-crime and fellow producer, Sally. Aside from sharing my love for rapid-fire brainstorming and internet memes, she’s also a great listener and a cherished friend.

Within two minutes, my predicament was solved. Such is the power of having a great woman in your corner.

So this week, I could take up space in your inbox with talk of an all but guaranteed new wave of Covid-19, or a blistering winter in the southern hemisphere coupled with unbearable heat in the north, or the rising cost of living - but I won’t.

Instead, I’m choosing to celebrate the women in my life who have taught me the art of resilience and the power in persistence by sharing their own experiences and hard-fought battles.

After all, that’s what FW is all about - community.

Whether it’s this heartfelt take on friendship from media titans and close friends Annabel Crabb and Leigh Sales, or an ode to the women we call our allies from our very own Jamila Rizvi - we’re not short of proof that platonic relationships make all the difference in our professional and personal lives.

Since joining the FW team last year, I can also testify to the incredible advice and insights I’ve gotten from what I like to call my β€˜digital friends’ in our online community. Women I relate to and care about, despite our never actually meeting face-to-face.

From them I’ve learned how to set boundaries, ask for a promotion, and create flexible working arrangements that suit my unique needs.

And when it comes time for us all to tackle the professional challenges we face as women, I know I can always count on hearing from fantastic experts like Mim Bartlett and Dr Lilly Brown in our Future Proof webinar series.

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend signing up for our next instalment - where we’ll deep-dive on finding our own personal brand of confidence, making strategic decisions and knowing how to play to our strengths in our day-to-day lives.

Future Proof is included in all FW Gold memberships for free. Join as a Gold member today and enjoy all benefits of our community.

Or else there’s the advice we glean from our colleagues, like FW’s Canberra Business Manager Alex Grant. With her wealth of experience and knowledge in the Australian Public Service, Alex is hosting a special Job Connections Webinar about carving out a meaningful career in government on Thursday 28 July.

So here’s your gentle nudge.

When was the last time you called your friends and said β€˜thanks’?

It can feel daunting at times, but it’s important to share our appreciation of each other. For all that we do.

For lending a caring hand, listening to your troubles, celebrating your wins, and commiserating your losses.

If it’s been too long, pick up the phone and tell your mates just how grateful you are to have them on your side.

It’ll mean the world to them, and help ground you in the present moment.

In these fast-moving and challenging times, I’m calling that a win.

Yours in friendship,
Bojana Kos
